In the late 1930's soft corsets and bodices on evening gowns became part of a Victorian revival, in part because of the popularity of films like "Gone With The Wind". By the late '40's the "new look" that was favored was one where the waist was small, the shoulders broad, and with the whole shape reflecting the hourglass figure. Thus, the corset came back, this time as a "bustier" being used in most of the evening gowns of that time period.
